Home Flood Assessments – Burlington
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Client: City of Burlington
Date: 2017/2018
On the third anniversary of a devastating storm that hit the City of Burlington in 2014, AET, together with The City of Burlington, Province of Ontario, and University of Waterloo launched the Home Flood Protection Program to help residents take actions to reduce flood risks. Since the program launch in 2017, AET has helped hundreds of residents find practical and cost-effective measures to alleviate their risk of basement flooding through the delivery of the Home Flood Protection Assessment.
Information gathered from the assessments completed in Burlington, allowed for the program to launch throughout other major cities across Canada that have been particularly susceptible to floods. As the frequency of severe rain events increases, it is important to take initiatives, such as the Home Flood Protection Program to understand your home’s unique risks and learn about what actions you can take to reduce such risks.
Client Testimonials:
Carol Solis, her parents, and daughter Selena lived through two devastating sewer back-up floods in Burlington in 2014. The time off work, negative health impacts, and financial losses associated with the damage motivated Carol to take action to reduce her family’s risk of future flooding. It also motivated her to urge others to take action. When Carol moved to a new property last year, she needed help to identify her top flood risks and make a plan to prevent future water damage. On the third anniversary of the Burlington flood when the City announced it was providing funding support for the University of Waterloo’s Home Flood Protection Assessment Service, she decided to register.“During the assessment I learned about all the different ways that water might enter my home and the top actions I can take to reduce my risk. I also learned about the subsidies in Halton Region that can help me take action,” explains Carol.
“I would recommend having an assessment to anyone who wants to understand what they need to do to protect their home and personal belongings. The assessment has provided us with peace of mind.”
