Tiny Houses and CRD Wood Waste
Client: Environment and Climate Change Canada
Location: N/A
Start & End Date: 2024
AET was contracted by ECCC to complete a research report for the purpose of examining how reclaimed construction, renovation, and demolition (CRD) materials (with a focus on wood) could be effectively sourced and incorporated into the design and construction of tiny houses. Further to this, it aimed to examine how such houses could be part of a wider effort to improve the availability of affordable housing in Canada and facilitate the circular economy by creating higher value market opportunities for reclaimed wood from CRD waste.
To accomplish these goals, research into a multitude of topics such as waste management strategies, the circular economy, CRD waste collection services, wood recycling, lumber grading, deconstruction, the tiny house movement, building codes, and affordable housing, was undertaken. Sources varied, and included peer-reviewed journals, government publications, news media, blogs, company websites, and stakeholder interviews.
